Final Fantasy 14 Players Are Not Happy About The Game’s New Cosmetics
On September 30, Final Fantasy 14 released new cosmetic items on its Online Store to commemorate the long-awaited launch of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles. However, the new items drew concerns from Final Fantasy 14 players, with some pointing out that the combined cost was more than Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles was at launch.
Set in the war-ravaged land of Ivalice, Final Fantasy Tactics originally launched on the PlayStation in 1997, and the basis of its story is the conflict known as the War of the Lions. The war pitted characters like Ramza Beoulve and Delita Heiral against one another as part of a larger conspiracy. Although FF Tactics received a PSP-exclusive port, subtitled The War of the Lions, the game was absent from modern platforms until 2025. The Ivalice Chronicles includes both the Classic PlayStation version, which includes an updated translation, and an Enhanced Edition that includes voice acting along with various quality-of-life changes.
Final Fantasy 14's New Cosmetics Cost More Combined Than Their Inspiration
As Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles was released on multiple platforms, Final Fantasy 14 honored some of its characters with new cosmetics for players to purchase. Final Fantasy 14‘s newest Online Store items include Ramza’s Attire, Ovelia’s Attire, Gaffgarion’s Attire, and the Final Fantasy Tactics Orchestrion Set. Each new Final Fantasy Tactics character outfit costs $18 apiece before taxes, while the Orchestrion Set will set players back $15. While the individual prices of the new Online Store offering are in line with comparable items, the combined cost drew the ire of some users. On the Final Fantasy 14 subreddit, players pointed out that the combined cost of the new Final Fantasy Tactics-inspired items was $69 before taxes. Ergo, the items cost about $19 more combined than Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles upon the game’s release.
The new Online Store offers are not the only thing that recently caught players’ attention. In July, Final Fantasy 14 released the Crystarium Rebel’s Attire, inspired by the outfit worn by Alisaie Leveilleur during the Shadowbringers expansion. While the Crystarium Rebel’s Attire can be worn by any Job in FF14, it primarily consists of similar-looking pieces already available in the game.
Both Final Fantasy 14 and Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles were developed by Creative Studio 3, with Naoki Yoshida serving as a producer on both projects. With Final Fantasy 14 preparing to launch Patch 7.35 on October 7, it remains to be seen what additional cosmetics Square Enix has planned.
